What is an SLP?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are communication specialists who help people of all ages improve their speech, language, social communication, and swallowing skills. Whether working in schools, hospitals, private practices, or rehab centers, SLPs make a lifelong difference in the lives of individuals with communication challenges.

How Do You Become an SLP?

  • 1. Earn a Bachelors Degree

    Most students major in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSAD) or a related field.

  • Complete a Masters Program

    A graduate degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited program is required.

  • Pass the Praxis Exam

    After graduate school, students must pass the national certification exam.

  • Apply for State Licenseure & Certification

    Most SLPs earn their Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) through ASHA.
